Norcross Community Market to Open with a Toast to the City's Green Initiatives on June 3rd

The Norcross Community Market will start its second season in Lillian Webb Park with a toast to the city's green initiatives on Saturday, June 3rd at 9 a.m. City of Norcross Mayor Bucky Johnson along with other local dignitaries will participate in a "toast" to celebrate the recent Platinum Green Community status received from the Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC) marking the important role the Norcross Community Market plays in the city's sustainability priorities. The beverage for the toast will be provided by local vendor, Joaney's All-Natural Drinks. The public is invited to observe the toast and are encouraged to stay and shop for fresh, locally grown food, meet the producers and enjoy the other family friendly activities at the Norcross Community Market, which lasts until 1 p.m.

The City of Norcross was recognized again this year, this time as one of only two local governments in the 10-county metro area to obtain the highest level of certification. The ARC's Green Communities program recognizes leadership in implementing policies and practices that contribute to the efficient and sustainable use of resources. The Norcross Community Market is just one of many initiatives aimed at promoting sustainability in the City of Norcross.
The Norcross Community Market offers more than healthy food options from local farmers and business vendors. Saturdays in Norcross are for the health and wellbeing of citizens and for bringing the community together. Neighbors meet to enjoy a variety of unique programs that accommodate all ages with fun activities, live music and educational offerings.

Educational offerings include cooking demos with local chefs and food educators, the "Ask a Master Gardener" booth, and participation of the Sustainable Norcross Bike/Ped Committee, which provides citizens the opportunity to enjoy the city through group activities such as the recent Bite Ride and the monthly walking group.

For the health and wellbeing of seniors in Norcross, the market continues to participate in the Senior Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program. One of only four farmer’s markets in the 10-county metro area, Norcross Community Market manages a grant to provide low-income seniors with vouchers that can be exchanged for healthy, local produce at farmer’s markets. In collaboration with the Wholesome Wave Georgia Fresh for Less Program, the values on these food vouchers are doubled, benefiting qualified seniors of the Norcross community. Information on registration events where eligible seniors must pre-qualify will be published on the market Facebook page and website. SNAP shoppers can also double their purchasing power on qualifying purchases when they swipe their EBT cards at the welcome tent on market Saturdays.

As part of the city’s overall sustainability efforts, the Norcross Community Market also promotes a recycling theme each month. For the month of June in honor of Flag Day, the citizens can recycle faded and frayed flags at the market. Recycling of beverage cans, plastic bottles and cardboard is a standard feature at market events.

The Norcross Community Market is made possible by dedicated volunteers and is always open for those looking to help sustain these summer gatherings that enrich the local community. Volunteer with or sponsor Norcross’ local farmer’s market and help build community around food at these family friendly events where all are welcome. Norcross Community Market is held rain or shine on summer Saturdays June - August from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Lillian Webb Park, 5 College St., Norcross.
