Sesquicentennial State of the City Address 11.12.2020
NEWS RELEASE:
NORCROSS MARKS 150TH ANNIVERSARY WITH VIRTUAL STATE OF THE CITY
NORCROSS (GWINNETT COUNTY), GA (NOVEMBER 12, 2020) – The City of Norcross has released a special video presentation—Mayor Craig Newton’s “Sesquicentennial” State of the City Address! In it, Mayor Newton takes viewers on a virtual tour of the city, showcasing changes and accomplishments over the past 150 years, including updates on some highly anticipated developments for 2021.
Established on October 26, 1870, the city began making plans to celebrate its 150th anniversary early in 2019. A committee was formed, a logo was designed, events were planned…and then came the pandemic and widespread cancellation of large gatherings. Still, “the show must go on,” and the city put together a series of commemorative merchandise, social media posts, ads and more throughout 2020. There was even a special keepsake edition of the city’s monthly newsletter distributed in October, featuring fun historic facts and pictures from then and now.
But you only turn 150 once, and a major milestone like a sesquicentennial warrants a bit more fanfare, despite the conditions we find ourselves in this year. Mayor Craig Newton knew just what he wanted to do to mark the occasion—a state of the city address!
“A lot of life has been lived inside the borders of Norcross over the last 150 years,” he explained. “We have experienced highs and lows, good times and tough times—and we have done it all together. I am so proud of how far we have come, and we owe it to ourselves to celebrate! While our anniversary party has been postponed until next year, there’s no reason we can’t take time now to revel in all our amazing city has to offer us, and that’s what this ‘State of the City’ presentation is all about. I will take you on a tour of Norcross and show you not only how far we have come after 150 years, but also all of the great things in store for our future!”
Mayor Newton’s presentation can be found on Facebook, Youtube and the city website. Please stay tuned for more information on Norcross’ anniversary party, coming in 2021.
